Double Love Sweet Valley High Series Book 1 Francine Pascal 9780553250336 Books
It's been a long time since I read the Sweet Valley High books--over 25 years, I'm sure. I don't remember exactly how I began reading them. The tales of twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield entertained me when I was a middle schooler, and I have always carried fond memories of the books.Double Love, Francine Pascal's first novel in the series, introduces the main characters Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield and their family. The Wakefields are an upper middle-class family (wealthy enough to have a Fiat convertible), and twins Jessica and Elizabeth share a home with older brother Steve and their parents.
Not long into the story I realized there were major POV issues and the writing was so corny! I wondered how on earth I didn't notice that before, and then I remember I was ELEVEN when I last read this book.
Also, quickly into Double Love I discovered how ridiculously heartless and spiteful Jessica's character is. She treats her twin sister horribly and has no trouble lying to her and being deceptive.
Elizabeth, though she's Jessica's identical twin, is a polar opposite in personality. Elizabeth is self-sacrificing, and it's definitely a fault. She will allow her conniving sister have her way. In so doing, Elizabeth encourages Jessica's deception and dishonest personality.
The sisters' personalities seem over the top, which makes them feel unbelievable.
That said, plunging into this series has been overall a delight. In spite of the unrealistic feel of the characters and the POV issues, I will most definitely continue reading. Double Love has been a wonderful blast through memory lane, and I look forward to continuing on to Book #2, Secrets.

My daughter loves it
I am an old SVH addict. I admit it, even as my 34 year old self, cringes a little bit. I stopped reading the series when I was about 19, too old for the books even then, I guess. About three years ago, when I was home for weeks on medical leave I ordered some online (my originals being long gone) and voila, in a few weeks I was the proud owner of the entire original SVH series, AGAIN. I read them until my six weeks of leave ended but I still kept collecting. So its very odd to me, that just a couple years after I start thinking about them again, they pop back up with a modernized version. I was excited. I have a twelve year old daugter. I wanted nothing more than some cool remake to renew the names of Jessica & Elizabeth Wakefield in today's culture. I eagerly sank into these books when they arrived. I was disappointed beyond belief to see the Dairi Burger completely gone to make way for a funky named Mexican restaurant. What, there aren't any small independent burger restaurants in small sunny California towns anymore? The twins are a perfect size 4 now instead of a 6. There are no sororities and fraternities (which seems legit to me as even in the 80's I never knew a high school with them) Enid has straight hair instead of curly hair, which makes me wonder if they are modeling her after the actress that played her on the tv series. Most of these changes are ok with me, I guess. I don't like that Bruce seems to be missing his 1Bruce1 license plate. I don't like that Dana Larson has become a goth girl imitation of herself. I don't like that Winston seems to play a geekier role than before, if possible. I know I will still buy each of these books. I am dying to see young girls devouring these remakes like I did (hopefully), I am dying for the appearance of the much anticipated Sweet Valley Confidential set when the twins are 26 years old, and I am dying for this New Kids on The Block reunion. Hey, I said I was all about bringing the 80's back.
Hadn't read these since my childhood. Was nice to relive the memories. Forgotten how much of a manipulative snake "Jessica" is.
I grew up with Jessica & Elizabeth, from elementary school up! This was one of the series I started reading as a kid that introduced me to the joy of reading! I've read every book through all the series.
I read the series years ago. Memory lane is fun. I was 11 when I started reading these books. Now I can read them again courtesy of .
This is the first is the re-issued Sweet Valley High series which have been updated somewhat to match changes in technology and other things.
Elizabeth wants Todd for a boyfriend but Jessica has set her sights on him already. The entire volume is Elizabeth being sad because it seems her sister and Todd are a couple, but appearances are not always what they seem to be. We also see how Jessica can be very reckless in her behavior, accepting a ride from a boy who has a bad reputation. We also learn that she can be very deceptive and doesn't always think of the effects her deception might have on her sister.
It's a good opening to the revised series.
The Sweet Valley books were my absolute favorite books when I was younger. I started out reading Sweet Valley Kids, then Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley High, and finally Sweet Valley University. I couldn't wait to go to the bookstore so I could pick up the newest Sweet Valley book and I tore through it as soon as I bought it. I ended up selling all of my books a long time ago, back when I thought I would never pick them up again. Boy, was I wrong! I wish I had them back but thankfully, we are able to get at least some of the Sweet Valley High books as books. I was so excited that I bought the first book so I could reminisce about the days when I would get caught up in the world of Sweet Valley. I had such a fun time reading this book that I may have to buy the others for my .
I think these books are great for today's high school age girls who would like to read a good series that their moms may have read. I highly recommend them!
