Trust your inner voice, no else's voice can truly guide you, forward intent is more important then the destination
Despite some paradoxes in the eschatological laundry list at the end. The book is absolute caramel for the troubled mind. I love the Zen input and the insight into our collective psyche. It is a keeper. Don't lend it to anyone who doesn't understand the term "boomerang".
This book will never be obsolete and it is an excellent reminder of who, why, and what we are at any given point in life's journey. All knowledge is within us and the only constant in life is change.
I've used this as my "bible" reference every morning. Some sage advice.
S. Kopp’s text is written as a therapist to a friend. The tone is subtle but direct. The premise is this along life’s path one must arrive at their own truth. Siddhartha’s life journey is the spine of the narrative. Given how society has moved from reality to virtuality, Kopp’s text is even mite relevant today than penned ~ 20 yrs ago.
I read this because "Peter" from the TV show "Fringe" said it was his favorite book and I really ended up liking it. Great stories and insights. Very Zen in a non-traditional way.
Unfortunately, this isn't a book you can explain to others. I will say this, if you have the slightest curiosity, I suggest you read this book; however, you must follow this book closely and pay attention to its narrative in order to grasp its full meaning. Moreover, you should access your ability to read between the lines, so as to thoroughly understand it. You may need to read other pieces of literature because Mr. Kopp references other materials to make his point. For example, he uses Dante's Inferno in his book and if you don't know the meaning behind that poem you'll miss the point Mr. Kopp's trying to make.
This book gave me clarity on my life and a new perspective as well. Upon completion of this book, I immediately started making adjustments in my life to follow the book's suggestion. I'll leave you with this, trust yourself and no one else, after all, as an adult you're your best teacher as a "grown up". Simply put, "If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him!
Thank you to the TV show "Fringe" for exposing me to this book so happy to have read it. Great book and an even better life changing read! Happy Reading!!!
It is rather arbitrary to put a finish date on this book because I read it through almost every year. I have the version, and I dip into it whenever I have a few minutes waiting for some event. This book saved my life. I began reading Kopp in 1984 as part of a personal therapy pilgrimage. His wisdom in facing the issues that plague most of us led me to some of my most profound examination of my life.
I probably picked up the book the first time because of its intriguing title. I came to understand that the book was Kopp's explanation of the psychotherapy model he uses. In his title, the "Buddha" is the one with all the answers. The psychotherapist does not. He is just like the patient, someone looking for answers and for a journey into self. Using ancient literature, especially from Jewish sources, the guides the reader and patients to the most powerful and dangerous journey of all. The journey into self.
I still find that it takes me about half a year to get through the book each time. The first time I read it, I stayed awake all night reading, and subsequently, I've read it again several times in a day or two or have taken months to read. It's always rewarding.
Personal preference as to whether it's a good book, so I can't really review it, but it does give one something new about which to think. In that respect, it's a good book.
