I will say first off "You Don't Have to say You Love Me" is still my favorite (and in my top 5 all time favorite romances), but I really enjoyed this book as well. What I've noticed about Ms. Manning's characters are that they are f'ed up, strewn with baggage and issues. However, their baggage never magically disappears just because they've met "the one" and in fact, the story is about how they overcome their baggage and issues to finally be good enough to be with their one, albeit in a hilarious, heart breaking, bloodied and marred way. The men stay jackasses more or less but you see the slow improvement and the reasonings why one can fall in love with them (totally excluding the looks and money and whatever), and the same with the women. At the end I wanted to smack David and kiss him at the same time, much like Ellie wanted to. The way their story evolved, I totally bought it and I wanted more.

P.S. Vaughn and Grace make an appearance in this book. I'll be honest again and confess that Vaughn....I still can't stand him! I only liked him because Grace did but without the Grace filter...I just can't.

It Felt Like a Kiss Sarra Manning 9780552163279 Books Reviews

This book started out very very slow for me. It just dragged. But it really picked up around the middle and then leveled out in the end. I enjoyed the book overall. One thing I didn't like was the Ari flashbacks. I just didn't like the way they were done, I felt like it broke up the flow of Ellie's story sometimes. Surely there was a better way to do those.
It took a while to get into this story but it was cute and entertaining in a peaceful way. Ellie was easy to like and the romance was interesting to me. I liked hiw she carried herself. How she actually could see her own worth. Easy, but a bit slow read.
I have now read three of this author's books and there is an intensity in the characters that I like and which captures my interest and imagination. For any story this is what I need and this book has it. The rock star dad, the publicist, the struggler mum and the extended family all pull together to make an enjoyable read as does the development of the relationship with the rock star dad's lawyer. Nothing earth shattering but interesting relationship dynamics and a really enjoyable read.
I hated the jumping back and forth in time. The main story is 26-year-old Ellie in 2013. There were seventeen flashbacks to 1986 and 1987 about her mother dating and having a baby. I would have preferred the author tell the entire 1986 story first, and then the Ellie story. There was nothing major in the flashback story that needed to be saved for later. During the present day story I was impatient for things to get moving, and the flashbacks added to the impatience.

The best part was the way Ellie responded to negatives in her life. Also very good was the variety of interesting characters. Vaughn was Ellie’s boss, always angry at his employees and frequently firing Ellie but not meaning it. I liked David the lawyer who worked for scumbags which forced him to do things which hurt Ellie.

I was not happy with the plot. Some bad things were done to people and the scales were not balanced. I prefer revenge, payback, fairness. Some harmed individuals could have received compensation but they declined. That did not feel good. I wanted to see certain people suffer or something. That felt undone.

There were about eight sex scenes. They were very brief, which was ok. They were good enough to show relationships.

I really enjoyed the author’s other books “You Don’t Have to Say You Love me” and “Unsticky.”

DATA
Narrative mode 3rd person. length 6,754 (416 pages). Swearing language strong including religious swear words but not often used. Sexual language strong. Number of sex scenes about 8. Setting 1986, 1987 and 2013 mostly London with a little Paris, France. Copyright 2014. Genre contemporary romance.
4 Stars! I really enjoyed reading the story of Ellie (Velvet) and her mum. Actually the flash backs to 1986 seemed a bit much for me. Seemed like it could have been wrapped up in a prologue. After a few times, I skimmed to get the idea of what was going on as I loved getting back to reading the present (Ellie's story). When she first meets marathon running/lawyer David at the festival it all seemed like it should have been magic from the start. It could have been lovely except for all the complications, sigh! Her crap boyfriend at the time shows up by her side and then starts the ball rolling in a fun/angst romantic story. This is the second book I've read by Sarra Manning and I'll be reading more.
Is it the whole British thing? But how can people be pushed around so easily. Ari gets pushed around by Billy. Ellie gets pushed around every single person in this story. I wanted somebody, anybody to grow a freaking backbone. I am an anglophile but Amies don't get some of your slang. You might want to keep it to a minimum please. The ending, the bad guys win. I wanted the Billy character to get messed over but he remains untouched and untouchable. Disappointing.
The main story of the book is good. The plot is pretty great - illegitimate daughter of rock star becomes famous overnight in tabloid-histeric UK. The storyline is really cool, and the writing also great quality.
A couple of things that I didn`t like, or thought were unlikely to happen in the way the story progressed. Ellie is portrayed as someone very confident, successfull, intelligent, and yet (SPOILER ALERT) she puts up with an abusive boss, is coerced into participating in a lame TV show, let`s herself be "kidnapped" by the lawyer and the PR lady. It just doesn`t really fit with the character.
I also thought the connection between her and David Gold was too abstract (they touched and felt sparks?), and although he does a couple of nice things throughout the story, in most parts he was kind of an insensitive arshole and very unlikable.
I will say first off "You Don't Have to say You Love Me" is still my favorite (and in my top 5 all time favorite romances), but I really enjoyed this book as well.
